Favoritism

By Linda Tancs

Playing favorites is a dangerous game. As the apostle James reminds us, it’s a sin (James 2:9). After all, it’s a form of discrimination, or judgment. In one way or another, it’s looking at the outer appearance, whereas, God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). Our goal is to love as God loves. Be merciful, as God is merciful (James 2:13).

Wherever You Go

By Linda Tancs

We can’t run from ourselves. That’s the premise behind the expression, wherever you go, there you are. However, it’s also important to remember that wherever you are, God is there with you. He’s with you at your highest peak and at your lowest depth (Psalm 139:7-12). Here, there and everywhere. Thank Him for that.

Turn It Around

By Linda Tancs

In business, a turnaround specialist is someone who helps struggling businesses recover and thrive. God is the ultimate turnaround specialist! He helps us in our struggles to recover and thrive. Nothing is impossible for Him (Luke 1:37), unlike a specialist in the business world. In all things God works for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28). Cast your cares on Him, and let Him turn it around (1 Peter 5:6-7).

Start Your Engine

By Linda Tancs

If you’re familiar with professional auto racing, then you know that popular refrain, “Drivers, start your engines.” If you’re a driver on that track, then you know you better be ready when the call comes. It’s a lot like that for all of us, actually, professional driver or not. Only God is the announcer (John 15:16). And you don’t have to worry about losing the race. When you follow His call, you’re always a winner (Philippians 3:14).

The End From the Beginning

By Linda Tancs

God knows the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10). In the psalms, we’re reminded that every day of ours is recorded in His book even before we were born (Psalms 139:16). That means that God has experienced each of our days before they even get to us! Nothing is a surprise to Him. Ponder that the next time you’re tempted to feel that God is absent from your life.

Just the Beginning

By Linda Tancs

At Christmas it’s especially fitting to remember that Jesus’s birth was just the beginning. Indeed, the story doesn’t end with an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger (Luke 2:11-12). The joy of His birth culminates in the joy of His resurrection (Romans 5:8). Don’t forget the full message of Christmas as you celebrate this season.

When the Frost Comes

By Linda Tancs

Have you ever been frozen out of a situation? Maybe you were left out of a lunch group, denied an opportunity to join an organization or otherwise rejected. Situations like this remind me of a quote from J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Fellowship of the Ring: “Deep roots are not reached by the frost.” You are a son or daughter of the King (John 1:12). Rest in your knowledge of that. It gives you roots, a firm foundation, to endure being slighted in this life (Psalm 1:3).

Starry Nights

By Linda Tancs

God created the stars and, as a popular song says, He knows them by name. He knows the lifespan of every star in the sky and guides each of them to its expected end. So as God so guides the stars, surely it’s a comfort to know that He’ll chart a course for you as well (Luke 12:7). Remember that the next time you’re enjoying a starry night.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

By Linda Tancs

Jesus wasn’t shy about making himself a house guest. After all, he told the tax collector Zacchaeus that He would be staying at his house. (Luke 19:1-10). To associate with a sinner (a wealthy and detested tax collector) was unthinkable to his cohorts. But Jesus didn’t think like others think because He loved unlike others loved. The core of love is acceptance; the fruit of acceptance is redemption. Zacchaeus was a redeemed man thanks to his encounter with Jesus. What a dinner party that must have been!

Free But Not Cheap

By Linda Tancs

An old saying tells us that “the best things in life are free.” Well, some of the best things in life are, indeed, free: air, sunlight, water, soil and other natural resources. Although they’re free, they’re not cheap, considering their life-giving properties. Likewise, salvation is free (Isaiah 55:1) and certainly not cheap, considering that it cannot be bargained for like chattel. It can’t be earned through good behavior or social standing. How grateful we should be that God puts no price tag on the gift above all other gifts (John 10:9).
