Remember Yourself Forward

By Linda Tancs

A charismatic preacher exhorted his audience to “remember yourself forward.” That’s a great way of reminding folks that they’re overcomers: you overcame before, and you’ll overcome again. Jesus is the ultimate overcomer (John 16:33). There is no struggle, adversity or hardship that you can’t overcome because you’re more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37). You’ve had the victory before, and you’ll have it again (1 Corinthians 15:57). Just remember yourself forward.

Right Back Up

By Linda Tancs

Setbacks are hard, but they should be expected (John 16:33). After all, the enemy comes at us with the aim that we lose our hope (John 10:10). That’s why it’s so important to recover from disappointment as soon as possible (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). I’m reminded of that when I hear these words from a popular song: “Knock me down. It’s all in vain. I’ll get back on my feet again.” The devil is a defeated foe; you already have the victory (1 John 5:4). So get right back up.

Paper Tigers

By Linda Tancs

The term “paper tiger” refers to something or someone that claims or appears to be powerful or threatening but is actually ineffectual and unable to withstand challenge. The world is a paper tiger because its temptations, troubles, opportunities and circumstances are no match for God’s influence and power. It offers no stronger foundation than a sand castle because Christ has overcome the world (John 16:33). Don’t let it become like the proverbial tail wagging the dog. You are the head and not the tail (Deuteronomy 28:13). You’ve been given all the power in the world to overcome paper tigers (Luke 10:19).

Peace Be With You

By Linda Tancs

The Bible reminds us that in this world we’ll have trouble (John 16:33). In some translations, trouble is defined as tribulation. No matter how it’s phrased, it doesn’t sound very peaceful, does it?

Let’s face it. Peace in this life is entirely conditional and fleeting. You’ll have it “so long as”—so long as you get a promotion, take your medication, keep that job, raise good kids and so on. Jesus understood the strains of daily living. That’s why He encouraged his followers to take His yoke upon them (Matthew 11:29). Peace isn’t found in a thing or a condition. It’s found in a Person (Colossians 3:15; Galatians 5:22).

If you incorporate His peace into your daily life, then your concerns won’t necessarily disappear, but you’ll be better able to deal with them (Psalm 34:14; Romans 12:18).
