The Elements of Surrender

By Linda Tancs

“I Surrender All” is a popular Christian hymn. As the title implies, you surrender all. But do you? God has a plan for our lives, and surrendering to Him means we set aside our own plans in favor of His—the better plan (Jeremiah 29:11). Think about what you can surrender: your physical well-being, emotional well-being, mental well-being, spiritual well-being, your marriage, your friendships, your family relationships, your retirement plans, your finances, your career goals and ambitions. Are you giving it your all?

Do You Think You Can?

By Linda Tancs

The signature line in the classic story The Little Engine That Could is “I think I can.” Thinking is good, but knowing is better. Someone once said that miracles come in cans. Dreams do, too. Believe that you can do all things through Christ Who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13).

Bitter or Better

By Linda Tancs

How do you react under adverse circumstances? Do you become bitter, or better? The root cause of bitterness for the believer is a lack of trust in God. Trust makes you better, not bitter. It’s not that complicated to trust God. Just turn your eyes toward Him (Psalm 121) and don’t dwell on your circumstances, seeking to resolve it on your own (Proverbs 3:5-6). Do this daily, and make trust a habit.

Let the Chips Fall

By Linda Tancs

The expression “let the chips fall where they may” suggests allowing events to unfold without interference. One source indicates that the phrase originated in the woodcutting trade, implying that a woodcutter should focus on log cutting and not worry about where the small chips fall. Do you look at “the big picture” or do you get mired in the details? You can’t understand everything. And if you obsess over details, then you’ll likely worry and fall into sin (Matthew 6:25-30). Even if you see the big picture, remember that God sees the bigger picture (Psalm 139:16). Let God arrange the chips (Psalm 46:10).

Your Future is Under Construction

By Linda Tancs

Do you worry about the future? Maybe you have concerns about your future as it relates to your job, your retirement, your health, your family or other things. The only certain thing about the future is that there is one (Proverbs 23:18; Jeremiah 29:11). It’s under construction—by God (Proverbs 16:9). Don’t get in the way of the Master Builder (Deuteronomy 29:29). God’s purpose for your future is in His hands until such time as He decides to reveal it to you. In the meantime, commit your work to Him (Proverbs 16:3) and trust Him (Proverbs 3:5).
